Meet Dr. Brian Schabel

Known for his exceptional skills with helping patients attain optimal oral health, Dr. Brian Schabel is dedicated to providing gentle orthodontic care that creates amazing smiles and beautifully straight teeth with proper function. As a father, he understands how to communicate with his younger patients; he seeks to engage them in the treatment process and educate them about the transformation happening in their mouth.  

 

Education

Raised in Santa Cruz, Dr. Schabel attended Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in biology, with a concentration in anatomy and physiology. He went on to receive his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, where he was class president and honored with the Board of Counselors Endowed Scholarship and the American Academy of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology Award.

Dr. Schabel then undertook a three-year residency in the distinguished Department of Orthodontics at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where he received his Master of Science degree. His research interests include smile and facial aesthetics, and four manuscripts based on his master’s thesis, “Orthodontic Esthetics: A Systematic Evaluation of the Smile,” have been published in prominent international orthodontic journals.

Emphasis on Continuing Education

In order to stay abreast of the constant changes in orthodontic technologies and treatment methodologies, Dr. Schabel regularly hosts and attends training and continuing education seminars. He is also the co-founder of the Paradigm Orthodontic Study Club. In addition, he is an active member of several professional organizations, including:

Outside the Office

Dr. Schabel’s wife, Dr. Vivian Chan, is also his partner in the North Coast Orthodontics practice. They live in Capitola with their two sons and a rambunctious boxer, Ronan — all of whom keep them active, whether they like it or not.

In addition to being an avid fan of Michigan football and UCLA basketball, Dr. Schabel enjoys mountain biking, golfing, snowboarding, and surfing. He has completed several triathlons, including the California half-Ironman, and was a top three age group finisher at the Wildflower Triathlon and a top 50 finisher in the Los Angeles Marathon.
